Last week I finished reading The Lovely Bones and in my opinion, this is a FANTASTIC book! I couldn't put it down and finished it in about 2 1/2 days, reading vigorously after work every day!
The story centers around Susie, the victim of a heinous murder by a man in her very own neighborhood. The book follows Susie's journey in the afterlife as well as her family's attempt to get over her and move on with their lives while she watches from the afterlife. Chronicalling 8 years of this family's life as well as the town deeply effected by Susie's murder in the early 70's, The Lovely Bones has a deeply touching message of love, family and survival. I loved the book so much that I finished it quickly so I could rent the film.

The film on the other hand is a HUGE disappointment, and not just because it's not exactly like the book. I found the film to be vapid and a little "Disney" for lack of a better word. The film tries to tell the story in a short year or two, rather than hire actors at different ages to play Susie's siblings. Much of the harshness of the original story is removed and instead, replaced with bubblegum filling and cliches. I didn't like this film at all and wouldn't have liked it anyway, even if I'd never read the book. Mr. Julep didn't like it either and he didn't read the book.
