I've been watching Project Runway since the beginning, but I have never been a fan of Nina Garcia - I usually find her to be overly critical and a little bit boring in her choice of favorites among the designers.
However, when I'm wrong, I'll totally admit that I'm wrong! I bought her books and have just finished The Little Black Book of Style. Let me just say, this book is AMAZING! It's intelligent and at the same time, a fun, quick and informative read! And the illustrations by Ruben Toledo are so beautiful! Any girl could learn a lot from this book and not just from Nina Garcia - she goes so far as to interview some real fashion greats including IMAN, Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, Christian Louboutin and Donatella Versace to name a few. She gives you the history behind the staples you have in your closet, telling you for example that Coco Chanel basically invented the sweater or that Burberry invented the trench during the war. It's so interesting and useful for updating your wardrobe. I won't ruin it for you if you haven't read it yet, but I thought I'd share with you a few of my favorite quotes from the book:
Nina: "Who or what has inspired your style?"
Iman: "My mom. She dressed without apology."
(to dress without apology is a true asset, don't you think?)
Nina: "Is too much really never enough?"
John Galliano: "Too much imagination? Too much fun? Too much excitement? Too much adventure? NO WAY! Enough is never enough and when you are tired of the routine you have to go seek adventure so that you never get enough - feed your mind, body and soul, and live life in a techicolor of imagination."
I've given away enough - if you haven't read this book, do yourself a favor and go buy it immediately! I'm now reading her sequal, The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Ever Stylish Woman Must Own. I'll let you know how I like it!
