Movie Reviews - Love in the Time of Cholera, In the Valley of Elah and Longford

With our crappy tv selection and great deals at the local Blockbuster, Mr. Julep and I take advantage of catching up on movies we never got to see by doing the 3 older titles for 4 nights for $5 deal!

Most recently we saw these three:
Love in the Time of Cholera is a beautiful film set in Columbia. The costumes, settings and filming were gorgeous to say the least. The plot on the other hand lacks a little something and Javier Bardem comes across as creepy in this movie, unlike his usual sexy! I would recommend it if you're running out of things to rent or in the mood for something that doesn't require too much thought, but all in all, I found this movie fairly disappointing...

In the Valley of Elah is EXCELLENT!!! Tommy Lee Jones is as brilliant as ever, playing an ex-millitary man who is investigating the death of his son who comes home from Iraq and goes missing. I thought it was very good and gave insight into what our boys go through during war... it's not pretty, to say the least.

Starring Jim Broadbent and Samantha Morton (both of whom won Golden Globes for their performances), this multi-award winning drama tells the story of Lord Broadbent's crusade to get fair parole for Myra Hindley, a convicted murderer whom with her boyfriend Ian Brady, committed the famous Moors Murders between 1963 and 1965. This film is very good and chilling to the core, yet has a lovely message at the end. I think this film is a valid commentary on the human condition and how we can learn to forgive and see people as human. This film definitely receives the Pink Julep seal of approval! And if you don't know the story of Myra Hindley already, it delivers a chilling surprise at the end!
Did any of you see these movies? If so, I'm keen to hear what you thought of them!
I'm hoping something good comes to our island cinema this weekend! Hubby and I are running out of movies to rent!
xoxo,
Pink Julep!
