Pink Julep at the Movies: This is It

I'd like to say that I really enjoyed this movie but I'm just not sure I can, but not because it's bad. I'm a huge MJ fan and a big ole softy and I cried through the whole film! What a tragic loss! And let's face it... he may or may not have done some things that were strange or immoral, but there's absolutely NO denying that Michael Jackson was an innovative performer and quite possibly the greatest showman on earth! In this film, we get to see how he works and he was nothing if not a perfectionist as well as a talented musician and dancer with and eye for what looks good and an ear for what sounds amazing!

One of my favorite things about this film was the rockin guitar player Orianthi! She's gorgeous and this chick rocks! What an amazing talent! She made me wanna buy a HOT PINK Stratacaster ASAP!!!

The dancing is everything you'd expect from the King of Pop who has had us all moonwalking in the kitchen when no one is looking since the 80's! (Admit it... you know you do it too!) I found it disturbing that at 50 years old and in a fragile state, MJ made the 25 year old professionals around him look like amateurs. It was just confirmation that NO ONE WILL EVER BE THAT GOOD AGAIN! Scary!

As a dancer I learned a lot of MJ's choreography in classes through the years and I found it difficult to not get out of my seat and shake a boogie! SHAMON!

But all in all, I am so saddened by the loss. I'm also sad that my whole life I've dreamed of seeing Michael Jackson live and I never got to. Hubby promised to take me to London to see the This is It tour and we all know how that turned out. However, in seeing this film, we get to see Michael Jackson the person. Someone who cares about the planet and the environment. Someone who regularly tells the people around him that he loves them. Someone who was eager to work hard and bring something to the stage that no one had EVER seen before! It's definitely a must-see film!

Happy Movie Watching!

Major Snaps to the Newest Diet Book Author! Who Said She Was Clueless?!?!

I grew up loving Alicia Silverstone, particularly because of her tour de force performance as the girl I always wanted to be (minted, popular, fabulous, well-dressed... did I mention unaccountable and independently wealthy?) when I was growing up, Cher in CLUELESS!!!

I also loved her in the Aerosmith videos - so carefree and sprited with a then relatively unknown Liv Tyler:

And now I hear she's written a book about dieting and eating healthy:

She looks AMAZING!!! Did anyone else read this yet? I'm dying to know if it's good... I'm a little concerned that it might be all vegetarian. If anyone knows much about this book, please comment and fill me in. We won't get it on island for a while, I'm sure.
Hope you're all enjoying the start to your weekends!

Can I Go on a Date With You? I Promise Not to Get in the Way!

I seriously hope these two are seriously dating! I want them to go out, have a big funny sparkly crazy bi-continental wedding and then have a whole litter of glittery comical little K-Brand babies!!!

I mean seriously, how much fun would that be to see unfolding in our People Magazines every week!

They seem like so much fun, I totally wanna hang out with them! Or even just be a fly on the wall while they're shopping for Burlesque costumes and see through shirts! LOVE THEM!!!
Dear Katie & Russell,
Love you! Mean it! Come visit me in Cayman and sing me songs and tell me jokes!
Love,

Sad News

I am deeply saddened by the passing of yet another talented musician well before his time. DJ AM was only 36 years old when he died today. From what I've read, it seems that his untimely death may have been drug-related. Too many stars have fallen because of drugs! Take this example to warn your children, relatives, spouses and friends of the dangers of drug abuse. Your words and a few minutes of your time could save someone's life.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and co-workers during this horribly tragic time.

A Letter

Dear Heidi,

I refer to the below photograph of your performance at the Miss Universe pageant. Fortunately I was unable to watch what I have heard describe as an abomination, however I did see the below photograph and I immediately felt horror and embarrassment for you!

Maybe you were too young or you're currently suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, I'm not sure. But do you not remember the 2000 VMA's when Britney performed "I'm A Slave For You?" Why are you ripping off her wardrobe? Did The Hills cut your salary to make room for Kristin Cavallari, forcing you to go through Britney's donations to Good Will???

I now refer to exhibit two: Britney's outfit is not only better all around, but she also rocks this look a hell of a lot better than you do!

Poor sweet ignorant Heidi, there is a lesson to learn from this - don't try to imitate a legend when you'll never even be good enough to be a has been! It only makes you look worse, if that's even possible! And should the world be unfortunate enough to suffer through another of your hideous performances again, please, for your own good, instruct your costume designer to have an original thought instead of ripping off performers who are actually talented and dressing you in attire that's 9 years out of date!
Sincerely,
Pink Julep

Tribute

I am saddened by the loss of Michael Jackson. He was an amazing talent and a wounded soul. I only hope he found peace before he died.

I am annoyed that people are focusing on the drama... I mean, yeah, it's interesting and all, but we often remember very bad characters for their wonderful works of art... Andy Warhol wasn't such a great guy but we all like his art!

My favorite story about Michael Jackson revolves around some free stickers I received in a box of Cheerios when I was very little. One of them looked like the photo above. I put them on my wooden bed frame and got in soooo much trouble! But I thought they were so cool and that Michael Jackson was the coolest person on the planet and having those stickers on my bed was well worth the spanking!!!

My prayers are with the Jackson family... they've been through enough and I hope their hardships in future will be fewer and farther between... I will also continue my efforts in learning to really moonwalk in honor of the King of Pop until I get it right, but after years of practice, I still suck!

Happy Birthday Norma Jean!

Today is Marilyn Monroe's birthday. If she were alive she'd be 83 years old.

To celebrate the life of one of my big heroes, here are a few of my favorite photos of her. Enjoy!

Pink Julep at the Salon

Today I got up early and went to the salon for some beauty including a manicure and a full set of highlights and a slightly different style.

Here's the before:
I took in this photo from People Magazine of Sienna Miller and told the stylist that I'd like to continue growing my hair to look similar to this and that I'd like it a little lighter than hers.

He flat-ironed it so it looks a little flatter than I'd normally wear it, but I'm very happy with the color and the cut! And I've gone to a middle part after years of parting on the side. The color on my nails is OPI It's a Girl and I love it too!

Purple Reigns the Red Carpet in 2010

With awards season over (at least I think it's over...) I find myself reflecting on what we've seen on the red carpet so far in 2010 and what sticks out in my mind as a consistency is PURPLE!!! It's one of my favorite colors, so I'm delighted to report that I think purple is going to be a big color this summer and heading right into fall! Below I share with you a sampling of fabulous purple gowns we've seen on the red carpet!

Jane Krakowski looks regal and age appropriate in this number!

This isn't the best gown on the planet, but this color does wonders for Leona Lewis!!!

OMG! Tina Fey in a dress that NOT BLACK!!! And she looks a million times better for it!

THis is one of the best looks I've seen on Anna Kendrick, but the hair is dreadful. Anna, baby, you are GORGEOUS and young and you have your fabulous career ahead of you! But pumpkin, if you don't get yourself a good stylist, you're also gonna have a lot of bad press! You're pale, so stop wearing muted peaches and creamy colors cause they wash you out... and let your hair down! You're not 60!!! Purple definitely works for this girl!!!

I'm not sure if I love or hate Sandy's gown from The Golden Globes... I think I kinda like it!

Purple on Molly Ringwald makes her bright red hair shine... but the jewelry is odd... Keep it Simple and stay Pretty in Purple Mols!

From the side, it appears that this dress is fabulous... but turn her around and she looks like just another floozy with roses on her boobies... nice color though!

And while I'm at it, I just want to say, I saw this amazing Givenchy dress in shots from the runway and to be honest, it looks much better with the motion of the catwalk, however, it's still my favorite! It's beautiful, risky, sparkly, purple and well, it's just fabulously timeless in true Givenchy fashion and I love it!!! It gives me visions of Fred twirling Ginger magically around the dancefloor and throughout the entire awards show I wanted to rip it off her scrawny little body and squeeze my fat ass into it cause I think heave looks like the hemline of this gown! LOVE!!!

Will you be investing in any purple this spring? I certainly will!

Ew Gross!

Dear Brangelina,

Your behavior on the red carpet this evening is apauling. You should be thankful that Ryan Seacrest and Tim Gunn would lower themselves to talk you. You both need an attitude adjustment! By snubbing your interviewers, you are snubbing your fans. I realize you think that interviews are below you because you're so busy adopting more babies, but honestly, I just saw both your movies that you're nominated for and neither of you is going to win - so it might be in your best interests to be humble and give the viewing fans at home an interview to enjoy and stop being so smug!

By the way, I'm not one of those fans... I'm quite glad I didn't have to listen to you and am glad to have more time to listen to interesting and talented actors!

Sincerely,
Pink Julep

PS - Angelina, in case you haven't noticed, you're an American and America is in big trouble - perhaps you could take some time off from your busy jet-set world saving missions and concentrate some of your charity on your own people. We have orphans here too you know!

Gotta Get Something Off My Chest...

I have something to say about this whole Jessica Simpson debacle. It may be a little controversial, but I feel like I need to say my piece and well, it is my blog. I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way so before I start, I'd like to point out that I am approximately 40 lbs overweight and a former dancer - constantly trying to lose and get more in shape - therefore, I don't agree with anyone criticizing anyone's weight! No exceptions!
With that said...
I recently heard on CNN that in preparation for The Dukes of Hazard (see picture above) due to a contract that she signed, Jessica Simpson dieted and worked out hard 2 to 2 1/2 hours every day with a trainer because she signed up to look that way for the film (and the hefty paycheck too I'm sure).
She also did the video These Boots Are Made For Walkin where she proceeded to prance her newly skinny tone and sexy bod around in a bikini - the video was so sexual that it was banned in several countries according to wikipedia.
Having said all that - here's my 2 cents, like it or not:
When Jessica Simpson (and many other movie stars) did this rigorous workout regime for her latest project, she sold all the normal gals in the world up the river. But she didn't say, "No, I'll play Daisy Duke just the way I am!" she signed up for it (I'm sure she had to) and by doing so, she said it's okay and this is the way sexy women should look. Having done that, I feel like she opened the door for criticism. If she played the game and consented to having to look a certain way to be considered desirable, shouldn't it just be understood that if she didn't look the same way, the people who wouldn't have hired her or wouldn't have watched Dukes of Hazard would be taking numbers to criticize her? Everyone is very upset because Jessica Simpson is being held to a standard that she helped to create... It seems a bit hypocritical... that's all I'm saying.
Again, I'm not saying it's right to criticize anyone's weight and I don't agree with it. I just think she has a lot of fame and power - she's a role model and she's setting an example whether she wants to or not. And she gave into the pressure to get thin for her films, fueling the fire of criticism for all normal girls all over.
I'd also like to point out that I can't remember people being very upset when Britney Spears was criticized for having her gut hang out at the disgrace that was her Gimme More VMA's performance - everyone jumped on the bandwagon and made fun of her cause she was crazy and totally out of it! And she had just had two kids! I just feel like this whole situation has been blown out of proportion cause JS wore some bad mom jeans and there's not much more to say about her cause she hasn't been doing a lot lately!
I hope you all are enjoying your Friday!!! I'm done with my venting now!

Amazing Photo

Okay, so... I'm not the biggest fan of TomKat, but I have to say, this photo of them in Rio de Janiero is so flawless and classy! It looks like something out of a Kennedy spread in Life Magazine!

Katie Holmes has definitely grown into being a serious style icon! She is dressed perfectly for Rio, right on down to her mom bag full of toys! I was just really taken with this photo - it's very Pro-family Americana at its best... nice!

Pink Julep Goes Shopping: Mango

One of my new favorite shops is MANGO! I visited a MANGO at the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica and both hubby and I found great pieces for really great prices! Their clothes are hip and trendy yet they also have preppy and classic pieces as well! Originally from Spain, MANGO is like a Spanish version of competitor H&M, however I personally think MANGO is MUCH MUCH Better in terms of quality, fit and fashion. I have never been able to find much at H&M yet walked out with a bag full of great pieces for a grand total of $86 when I went to MANGO! It's seriously fab!!!

Scarlett Johannson is the face of MANGO. The ad campaigns can be seen on their website and she's stunning in them. Click here.

Penelope Cruz and her sister Monica have designed for the line as well.

Even if there's no location near you, they have online shopping on their website www.mango.com.

Happy Shopping!

Inspiring to Say the Least

I came across an article on CNN the other day about Demi Moore and Ashton Cutcher's Presidential Pledge video so I decided to check it out. It's inspiring to say the least. Whether you support Obama or not, this video shows the bigger picture that I think we all forget to see from time to time. No matter how small the deed, we can all make a difference!

After seeing the video, I befriended the Presidential Pledge on MySpace and would encourage you all to do the same if it suits you! And since seeing it, I've decided to stop using so much plastic for a start, especially since there's no recycling on Grand Cayman. I've purchased more tupperware to use instead of plastic baggies or tin foil for lunches and tonight at the grocery store I bought reusable shopping bags! I used to mock people for such things, but living in such a natural place where the indigenous sea turtles and lizards are near to extinction and the ocean's health is in danger I've seen the light and realized it's time to reduce my carbon footprint.

Here's the video - watch it and think about what you can pledge to help make our world a better place to live!

I'm So Excited, I'm So Excited I'm So...

Okay, can I just say... I love Chelsea Handler and I'm completely addicted to Chelsea Lately on E! She is so funny and catty and I nearly lost it a few nights ago when she went off on Kimora Lee Simmons's line on her neck! HAHAHAHA This beotch is wicked funny - I have a very similar sense of humor and often when I say things, people don't know I'm joking - I'm pretty sure that probably happens to her too! Catty crazy gal!

Tonight on her show she had Elizabeth Berkley, originally of Saved by the Bell fame and later, the Oscar worthy Showgirls (totally sarcastic!)... And by the way, don't even try to act like you never watched SBTB cause you know you did and you also know that when the reruns come on TBS it's like a bad car wreck and you can't help but look - it's addictive and pretty much everyone still watches it sometimes even though it's absolute Crap!

Anyway, Chelsea gave her the Saved by the Bell quiz and she actually revived her most famous line - from the episode where Zack puts the girls in a group called Hot Sunday to perform at The Max for agents and Jessie gets addicted to caffeine pills and oversleeps and when Zack comes to pick her up for the gig she delivers her famous line...

"I'm so excited! I'm so excited! I'm so.... SCARED!" I had to include a pic:

And for those of you who may not remember - Screech fills in for Jessie with Hot Sunday, Slater steels flowers out of Zack's yard for her and they all live happily ever after... THE END.

But seriously, how cool is Chelsea Handler for bringin it all back to us again - I think she's one of my new heroes! She even has a sidekick - Chuy Bravo, that cutie little nugget!

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in Hollywood!!!

Saw a blank star on Hollywood Blvd... wouldn't it look great like this?

Our hotel was located in West Hollywood, which was just too darn perfect! Thanks so much to all the girls her in blog land who recommended staying in that area! You were too right!!!

One of the great things we did was take a sunset horse ride through the mountains in Griffith Park to the top of the Hollywood Sign! It was AMAZING!!! 3 miles up and 3 miles down... 6 miles total in about 2 hours!

This is the only photo I have from the horse ride, honestly because I was scared to let go of the reigns on a 1,000 lb. animal... my horse was a little wild too... he wasn't always keen on staying on track and a few times would bend over to eat grass on the EDGE OF A CLIFF!!! I've never been sooo terrified, but honestly, I feel so brave for having done it! The drop was straight down mostly and terrifyingly high! But I survived! Yee Haw!!! This was the view! Breathtaking!

I had to share this because my first professional theatre job was playing a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz at a summer stock theatre for no pay!!! So cool they have their own star!!!

I dumped hubby briefly while we were there for this guy...

According to their website it was once said that "to visit LA and not see the Chinese is like visiting China and not seeing the Great Wall." I agree. It doesn't look like much at first...

But once I saw things like this, I got chills... OUISER BEAUDREAUX!!!!!

This was the first movie my mother ever saw so I can't wait to share this photo with her!

I felt chills when I put my hands in the prints of my all time favorite, the Forever Fabulous Ms. Marilyn Monroe!!! My hands fit perfectly!!!

This is an inspiring quote! Love it!

Couldn't resist a photo of this... I kept wondering if little Suri Cruise was inside!!!

Hollywood was an absolute blast! This is only a sampling of our photos, but you get the point! Next up... Santa Monica!

Pink Julep!
