A great tip my granny taught me when I was little is to paint your costume jewelry with clear nail polish to keep it from fading/tarnishing and also to keep it from turning you green!
These days, any recessionista worth her salt is stocking up on trendies that are cheap! This is a great way to keep your cheapies glittering longer and avoid that embarrassing green ring around your finger! I have done this with all my fake costume jewelry and believe me, I've been sweating in it with our temperatures rising every day here on the island and it totally works!!!
