When the new HBO film Grey Gardens premiered, I was in Cincinnati and pretty busy so needless to say, I didn't get to see it. I just found out it's coming on in about 1/2 an hour and I'm going to stop everything and watch it!!! So exciting!!!
I thought I'd share with you that last year about this time, I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Albert Maysles, who with his brother, made the first Grey Gardens - the documentary featuring the real Big & Little Edie Beals!!! He had a book coming out last year and I was working at an art film house in SoHo where we hosted an event in his honor and in honor of the new book coming out. The event included a showing of never before seen footage of Truman Capote when Mr. Maysles was filming him during a visit to New York from the detective of the crimes he wrote about in the famous novel In Cold Blood. It was thrilling!
The Maysles brothers are also famous for the Rolling Stones documentary Gimme Shelter!
Albert Maysles was a very nice man. Above is a photo I took of him. Unfortunately I never got the opportunity to have a picture with him and myself, but while taking this picture above, I had an Academy Award nominee for documentary filmmaking telling me what to do to make the photo better - that's a lesson if ever I had one!!! He is a true gem of American Film!!! I can't wait to see this film based on his masterpiece!!!
