To create the perfect piece of art requires a number of variables to be in order -- in the world of ceramics, for instance, the potter must manipulate matter, energy, time, and space -- and with that, can produce an infinite number of potential works of art.







So many factors are a part of what will result: there are countless ways force can be applied, limitless possibilities of what shape will evolve out of clay, and the timing, duration and intensity of the heat all play a role in the outcome.







And so it is with life -- there are many factors, like the time, place and the energy that we invest -- that play a role in creating meaningful and beautiful lives.







Ceramics and home accessories designer Reiko Kaneko certainly has merged beautiful ceramics with a beautiful life. Born in Britain, Reiko spent her childhood in Japan, and continuously draws on influences from both British and Japanese cultures, blending the two in the pieces she creates.







Having studied Arts and Design at Central St. Martin's College, Reiko specializes in ceramic design and supplies bone china design. In 2007, she established a design studio in London’s East End, where she creates the most exquisite home accessories and fine bone china tableware -- gorgeous pieces like her renowned boat, which was first launched at the famed Maison & Objet show in Paris earlier this year.







Featured on the pages of publications such as Vogue Living, Elle Decor and Marie Claire to name a few, Reiko has become one of the top designers in ceramics today.

{top five favourite pieces of advice for young artists & designers:}



1. I find the more I learn, I realise how little I know, so my first piece of advice is to always keep trying, experimenting, and learning.



2. Use all the tools available to you -- for instance, YouTube and google are great senseis, or teachers -- don’t underestimate them!



3. Rome wasn't built in a day, so be faithful to your dreams.



4. Live every day as if it's your last, but also live as if you'll be alive for a very long time.



5. Above all, enjoy everything you do -- a lot!

{favourite five: floral stylist denise porcaro, part 2}

Summer is in full bloom, and that means being whisked away in flowing chiffon dresses to park picnics that have been long-awaited, basking in the glowing sunshine. Summer means long leisurely walks in the city, it means holding hands watching the sunset over the lush poppy fields of the countryside, it is the time when we can slow down to savor every moment and connect with the outdoors again.



And of course we couldn't help but to notice it all being more beautified with flowers, flowers everywhere. Whether in lush park gardens flooded with sunlight, in the bright floral prints worn poolside, afternoon dinner party tables adorned with peony arrangements, or in the crowns of daisies in our hair, flowers remind us that planting a seed and putting in the hard work has the most alluring and divine results, and that the warmth of summer is finally here to delight in.



This week, in a special follow-up interview, we called on the expert of glamorous bouquets and blossoms, Denise Porcaro of Flower Girl New York, to share with us her:

{top five favourite flowers}

1. Lily of the Valley
"This blossom reminds me of my childhood, as it was always blooming in the spring on my block in my hometown of Jackson Heights, Queens; my grandmother’s home was on that same block and this flower always reminds me of her."

2. Honeysuckle
"This is another flower that takes me back to my childhood summers -- my aunt and uncle had the most beautiful honeysuckle vines behind their house; my mother showed me how to suck the honeysuckle out, and I was fascinated by that as a child. Their scent is intoxicating."

3. Grass
". . . reminds me of weekends in Long Island, taking in the summer sun and putting my toes in the grass."

4. Orchids
"There are so many different types of orchids, each unique and beautiful in their own way. Orchids remind me of going to the flower market when I first started my business -- I was just in awe of how amazing these flowers are and how many varieties of orchids there are. The vibrant colors they come in really struck me -- realizing that these vibrant colors actually grow in nature was such an "aha" moment for me!"

5. Garden Rose
"I just love the simplicity of this delicate flower. We take roses for granted because they are everywhere, but if you see a true garden rose, it is just so stunning when it is not processed."

. . . late-spring rain and blustery breezes, and lately there are fallen petals everywhere -- between the cobblestones, and winter-worn fountains, on boxwood hedges and in secret gardens -- and the scent of freshly picked roses in etched glass vases and beautiful bouquets of lilies of the valley are enough to make one wish for every morning on the terrace . . .

. . . happened across florence & florence, an utterly charming vintage shop run by mother and daughter, christine and annie florence, who have a love for beautiful things and "specialise in finding exciting second-hand pieces", filling their little shop with delicate glass compotes and filigreed pepper pots befitting the most elegantly extravagant dinner party on a mid-spring evening, scalloped cake stands and silver sugar tongs perfect for high-tea on a sunday afternoon, and tea & cake sets that will have you dreaming of the most romantic early april picnics . . .
