. . . and it was a perfectly lazy sunday: a quaint café with p, after an early afternoon of entertaining friends -- strong cups of coffee & good conversation, and there were roses and orchids from a saturday stop at the flower markets, banana bread and butter tarts and a late, late dinner on friday evening, ending with an evening out, red wine and candlelight on sunday night, and there is still so much to look forward to in the new week . . .
hope you've had an astonishingly lovely weekend, and that it was beautiful where you are, roséline xo
. . . always and forever photographing little snippets of life -- beautiful vignettes and new french desserts, glimmering chandeliers on warm summer nights, captured in memory and forever in time, and so, completely fell in love with the concept behind creative director, jane cameron's, blog, which is filled with these little magazine moments . . .
. . . and to hold on to summer for as long as possible, {or for those in the southern hemisphere, in anticipation}, pretty pink granita with a little spice . . .
w a t e r m e l o n, s a l t & c h i l i g r a n i t a serves 4
1 kg fresh, seedless watermelon, skin removed & roughly chopped 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp dried chili flakes
add watermelon, lime juice, salt & chili flakes into a food processor and blend until mixture forms a pulpy consistency
pass mixture through a sieve, pressing firmly through with the back of a spoon; discard remaining mixture from sieve
pour the sieved mixture into a wide metal baking tray or freezer-proof dish (make sure it will fit easily onto your freezer shelf) and freeze for approximately 2-3 hours or until ready to serve (mixture will keep in the freezer for 2-3 days)
when ready to serve, use a fork to scrape granita into shards and serve in dessert glasses
. . . books have been happily taking over since the beginning and there have been many, many {rather ambitious} attempts to corral the madness -- overflowing coffee tables and custom bookcases, built-ins and desk tops -- but not until happening upon this pale & pretty display of titles, has there been anything so perfectly chic . . .
The inspiration for her paintings, filled with the sweet nostalgia of times gone by, of timeless fashion and elegant pastimes, comes from many different places, including films, both classic and modern, and so, this week, we invite her to share with us her:
1. Gone With The Wind (1939) | watch the trailer I love a strong female lead, particularly if she is vain and very strong willed. I think that there's a little bit of Scarlett in every one of my portrait paintings. 2. Henry & June (1990) | watch the trailer Bohemian Paris in the 1930's. It's my visual hunting ground for ideas and images that I return to over and over again.
4. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (2008) | watch the trailer I was prepared to be annoyed by this film, mainly because of Brad Pitt as the shrunken little man, but instead I was charmed by it. I love the cinematography and the magic realism element. It really captures life as a magical and beautiful place which is something that I try to portray in my work.
5. No Country For Old Men (2007) | watch the trailer I have a bit of a dark side and this movie really satisfies it. Explaining how it influences me is a little difficult. I love the austerity, the isolation, and the unpredictable nature of the film. I paint a lot of empty rooms and a lot of people by themselves. I really enjoy solitude and I think there's an element of loneliness (albeit a happy kind of alone-ness) in many of my paintings.
. . . must confess, these days, would most likely find me anywhere {most likely in the office} other than the kitchen, unless it is to pour the champagne, or to linger about the hors d'œuvre, and of course, when there are cream-filled cakes and heart-shaped shortbread cookies sprinkled with confectioners' sugar . . .
{p.s.} a recent places feature, where one might also find me: here
. . . there are few things quite like awaking to the slow seduction of sunday light, followed by a {rather romantic} early morning walk to the café and strolls about the fruit markets for plums and summer peaches -- a welcomed change of pace from last week's flights and drivers and barely unpacked cases . . . and now, a sunny, summery monday, and ready for a new week and all of the wonderful things that it brings, catching up on correspondence and beginning new projects, finalizing plans and feeling the warmth of the golden afternoon sun at every turn . . .
hope you've had an astonishingly beautiful weekend, and that your week is off to a perfect start, roséline xo
"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."
. . . and somehow, amidst everything -- days at the office and starlit weekends in the country, after the rains and the windswept petals, softly, beautifully, and at long last, it has arrived . . .
happy first day of summer! & hope it's beautiful where you are, xo
